Egg donation program is an alternative solution for infertile women, who are not able to produce fertilizable eggs to carry and give birth to a child.
In Egg donation program, eggs are borrowed from a young woman (preferably than 33 years of age) called the donor, with her consent. These eggs are then fertilized with the sperms of the husband of the recipient woman and the resultant embryos, are inserted into the womb of the recipient. This allows the woman to carry the child and experience pregnancy, birth and breast feeding i.e the joy of motherhood.
Women with the following conditions can be benefited by egg donation program:
1. Women with non functioning ovaries:
Premature ovarian failure
Ovarian agenesis
Bilateral oophorectomy
Menopause
2. Women with functioning ovaries:
Risk of inheritable genetic disease in children
Failed IVF due to poor quality oocytes
Inaccessible ovaries
How a donor is selected?
Generally, eggs are borrowed from healthy women preferably less than 30 years of age and who are not suffering from any illness or genetic disorders. These young women, also called donors, are specially screened for Sexually transmitted diseses like (HIV, HbSAg, HCV, VDRL etc) along with routine blood tests including hormonal evaluation.Their family history is taken, to rule out any genetic problems. The donor can be married or unmarried. However, married donors with children would be preferable, primarily because they will have established their ability to bare children. Couples are free to bring in their own known individual who are willing to act as donors.
